Jesus is Better!

This past Sunday our pastor Justin did a sermon on “The Last Word” in Hebrews chapter 1 verses 1-4.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

—Hebrews 1:1-4

The book of Hebrews is convicting and challenging and unifies the storyline of the bible together.

We don't actually know who wrote Hebrews though some think it was Paul.

At some points in our life we are tempted to find our hope in someone or something else besides Jesus.

Verse 1 starts off like the beginning of an epic tale. This is Gods story about him and who he is. This is a huge statement.

Our world never stops speaking to us and telling us what to believe. What if amidst the noise if your life there was a clear voice? Consistent, caring, and clarifying. Wouldn't you want to listen to it?

Hebrews 1 tells us about the true voice (God's). It's of cosmic proportion. Our God is a feral God. He brought everything into being out of nothing just by speaking. Our holy God is speaking to us. He is personally and intimately involved.

We have his written word where he has revealed himself to us... love, mercy, rescue and redemption. The Bible is Gods word to us and its restoring and redeeming.

By his word we understand who he is and who we are. We can understand the world. By his word we can see as it is a light to us.

In Verse 2 he has spoken to us by his son. Jesus is son, sustainer, and savior. Jesus both shines and shows the glory of the father to us. The majestic of our God. Jesus both shines and shows the glory of the father to us. The majesty of our God.When God reveals himself through the son he speaks through Jesus.

God is before all things and all things hold together. From cosmos down to the very details of our lives. Jesus is the final and last word of God (Colossians 1:19-20).

Our sin separates us from God... we rebel against him. We can't fix our greatest problem by trying to do more or be better. This chasm exists because we have placed ourselves at the center of this story. We believe that we don't really need God or his word.

An example would be a 2 year old trying to control everything like eating food and going to bed. They want life on their own terms.

God is high and lifted up. He sent us his son to speak a better word. Jesus has not come to speak down to us. He comes as one of us to enter into our brokenness.

You are free because of who Christ is and what he has done. Rest in this freedom.

Jesus is  our savior and sacrificial lamb. He is the first last and final. He is the priest and king who sits on the throne along with God. If you want to know who God is then we find the answer through Jesus.

We can have a foundational belief that Jesus is all we need, but functionally we don't believe this. So we chase after other things to fill or distract or numb us.

What do you chase after? What do you run after?

God always provides The Who. Jesus alone is the answer. Jesus is better than anything else this world promises us.
